Waiting to Exhale in Boston

Vacation. Holiday. Going anywhere but here. 'Tis the season, isn't it?

David and I, along with several family members, are heading to Boston, Mass for the 4th of July.
david's birthday 072

So far, we have no agenda. Where to go? Who to see? What shops to visit?

Come on blogland. Help us out. We need a plan. Some idea of what to do. What do Texans do for fun in Boston?

I'm sure there is some wonderful history to soak up. Any good hole in the wall places to eat? Shop? Visit? What can you tell us?

Happy Monday!
~Mindy

  2. Hi Mindy, I've never been to Boston so I can't help with that, but I want to thank you publicly for helping out a stranger (me) in need. Your kindness is really appreciated. I'm going to put a link to you on my blog to show my appreciation. Just so happens I was going to post my weekend garage sale finds on my blog today so we totally relate to each other.

  4. Mindy, I haven't been to Boston in years (shame on me, I'm only 5 hours away) but, you can visit Quincy Market, the New England Aquarium was exceptional! and I'm sure you can find a whale watch. The original "Cheers" bar is there. Dinner Cruise on Boston Harbor, not to mention the many historic sights...just a few things that I remember...oh, there's always Fenway Park, one of the 'older' ball parks...if you go, sit in the bleachers rather than under the roof...way more fun out there! Have fun.....:-)

  5. Oh Mindy,
Boston is OK so long as you don't get stuck in rush hour!. I would suggest if you have time that you either....head all the way north to Rockport, stopping at the Salem witch museum, just for fun. Rockport is gorgeous and there is antiquing all along the way and also in the city. Then / or go all the way South to Cape Cod, lots of cute B&Bs and antique shops. Have fun!

  8. It's been awhile since we were there but I loved Faneuil Hall. It's a big marketplace filled with fun. We loved Boston. I'm jealous. What a great place to spend the 4th. Isn't that where they have the big concert and fireworks display on the water? My sisters and I are heading to Door Co. which they call the Cape Cod of the upper midwest. That'll have to do for now. Have a wonderful trip. Jan

  11. Hi there,
I just stumbled upon your blog via Farm Chicks and, it just so happens to be that I am a Bostonian. The 4th of July is one of the best times to visit Boston, but you should be prepared for crowds. The city offers a lot of options depending on your pleasure. And, it can often be pricey (and getting more expensive by the day). Getting tickets to a Red Sox game is nearly impossible, but you can tour Fenway and learn it's history. There are Duck Boat tours that will take you around the city and inform you as well. Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market are great for tourist & locals alike. A short walk from there and you're in the North End for amazing Italian food (Giacommos is wonderful). The theater district can offer some wonderful shows and there are many places to go along the waterfront. For an outdoor cocktail by the water, try Tia's. If you have time and a car, head down to Cape Cod or up North to Rockport for quaint shops and wonderful seafood. The Museum of Fine Art has a nice exhibits going on right now http://www.mfa.org/exhibitions/index.asp?key=894

What you do will really depend on where you're staying, what your interests are and what your budget is. For high end boutique style shopping, hit up Newbury St. & Boylston St. (also for great cafes).
Prior to your trip, I recommend that you check out:

    and

    http://www.bostonmagazine.com/index.html

    To help w/your planning.

And, despite having a reputation of Bostonians being rude (which, I know we do). You'll find that there are many of us who are quiet friendly.

Enjoy your stay in our historical and multicultural city! We hope you come back again.

  12. Hi There,
I stumbled upon your blog via Farm Chicks. I'm also a life long Boston resident. The 4th of July is a great time to be in the city - but expect crowds. Here is what is going on this year: http://www.july4th.org/

I recommend taking in the North End for some amazing Italian food. I love Giacommo's (but it is tiny and doesn't take credit cards - but it's worth it) Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market are great spots for tourists and locals alike.

What you do really depends on where you're staying, what you're interests are and your budget. Tickets to a Red Sox game are virtually impossible to get, but you can tour the legendary Fenway Park.

I recommend checking out these sites to see if anything peaks your interest prior to your trip:

    www.boston.com/travel

    www.bostonmagzine.com

    www.dailycandy.com/boston

Enjoy your stay in our historical and multicultural city. I know we sometimes have a rep. for being rude, but you'll find just as many of us who are friendly ;)

Have fun and we hope you come back again.
