Show and Tell

Today, I share with you several of the boxes in my house. This first one is an old bottle carrier of some kind. It has been stained over, but if you catch the print in the right light, I think it says "Jack's Beverages" on the front.
See the dividers? Cool box.
Next, I think the top box came from kinfolk. But, I don't remember who. Mom? A little help if you are reading this. The bottom one...well, read the comments...Mom fills in the blanks on my waning memory. Grandma painted it this antique red color. Wouldn't have been my color of choice. But, changing it would involve work. And I hate the W word.
This next blanket box is the replacement piece for Cousin Janelle's old hope chest. Primitive. Clean lines. I like it! And it is stuffed with all my old quilts.

And now. Check out this mother of all mothers. See how big it is? It's a chippy blue color. I wax this baby and it is just awesome. More linens are stored in here. How many linens can one woman have? Well, I have a lot. For sure.
See the top? Waxed, it is just lovely.
Now. That was the SHOW portion of this post. It is now TELL time. You tell me...See these stand thingies? I have collected them, waiting for my creative-genius-self to figure out something to do with them. Any suggestions? I've done hats. A puppet. Not sure a wreath would balance on top. Maybe you could just suggest a holiday idea. hmmmmmm
Happy Sunday!

  1. Love the chests and the stands. If you weld a hook to the front, you would have a perfect wreath stand or a place to hang a piece of art. You might also try magnetic clips and hang photos on them. They would be cute with a welcome message outdoors on the porch. Maybe holding a chalkboard so that you could change the message? Instead of a hook, you could weld a bar across so that it resembles a music stand or easel of some sort. You could use the taller ones to hang a towel over in the bathroom. I'm not sure how helpful my ideas are, but I sure love the stands!

  2. I like the replacement for Janelle's chest. The two you weren't sure about the origin - the top one was given to me, used, by Aunt Nancy when Terry was a baby. I used it as a toy box for many years and then it went to our lake estate to be used as a blanket box. The bottom one was Grandma Pinkey's and passed down to Grandma Riney who painted it (yuck). No telling what is under the paint. It is well over 100 years old and you can return it to me if you are planning to sell it. Then you can have it back in 10 or 20 years.

  3. Even though the long chest reminds a little of a coffin, they are really cool. I can only imagine how many linens fit inside that thing. Good luck with those stands. I'm interested to see what you do with them.

  4. Amy, I am loving the magnetic clip idea. Let me see what I can do with that. Welding. You know that is work. And I hate the w word! Gotta dig up a magnetic clip...

Mom, thanks for filling in the blanks. I thought the little chest was at the lake, but wasn't sure. Glad to hear you'll be with us another 10-20 years. Let's shoot for 20+, k?

Tricia, coffin. Yes. I have heard that before! It would be fun to use, scaring (and scarring) the children at Halloween, wouldn't it?

Keep the ideas coming! Ya'll rock! ~Mindy

  6. Those boxes are gorgeous! I love old things, to touch, to smell, to have, to live around. You're my kind of collector.

The stands, what were they? We are currently selling those rustic tin stars affixed to stands like these. A temporary affixing, maybe?

Thanks for coming by my place. How on earth did you find me?

  7. Cher, I use briwax. Love briwax! All bare wood should be given briwax. It makes everything look much healthier. Wood needs love, too. Glad you LOVE 'em!

WinaW, I am not sure what each stand originally was. 3 of them have thumb screws, like they are all missing something that went down into the top. From this examination, I can see that perhaps, an s-hook would fit in the hole, and I can hang something from it. hmmm I think I found you from FringeGirl. Love your writing!

By the way, Mom. I am not looking to sell any of these boxes. I'm just showing off.

  8. One stand might be about the right size for a paper towel holder. Sorry, that's all I've got!

  10. I am surprised that no one has mentioned BOB who seems to like sitting on all of your wood boxes. He certainly gets around.

  11. I love the paper towel holder idea. Since I keep paper towels in my kitchen and each of my baths that would take care of most of these. ;)

I can also see using the three taller ones as holders for the word "JOY" for the holidays. Print on cardstock with a pretty font, slice the top and bottom just a bit and thread over the top of the pointed rods. You could use the same idea for the smaller ones. Placeholders maybe?
